Chef Kami began cooking in the first grade. In 5th grade, she began traveling internationally. Within her traveling journey, she experienced various cultures cuisines. These experiences have influenced her cooking today. As her love for traveling grows, she continues to search for complex flavors to incorporate into vegan recipes. In high school, she served as chair of the Oakland Youth Commission. While holding the seat as the chair her team created policies for liquor stores to serve fresh, healthy food in the food deserts within Oakland. Kami studied Agriculture Business at Louisiana State University. While at LSU she helped start the first garden at Inspire Charter Academy in Baton Rouge, LA. There she taught agriculture classes to elementary students. Kami is passionate about creating easier access to organic food in urban communities of color. Kami’s agriculture background will help connect Hella Nuts™ to small local organic farms. Kami's business background will help connect Hella Nuts™ with retail stores.
Chef Mieko an Oakland California native, is the Founder of Imagine That Kids, and Co-founder of Hella Nuts™ Plant-Based Eatery. In 2013, Mieko was KQED Black History Month Local Hero. Mieko ran for Oakland Unified School Board in 2014, her passion for children and education helped her create activities that enforce educationally appropriate curriculum for children, their families, and local communities. She implemented several healthy lunch program(s) for students in Oakland and gives away more than 1500 toys and warm coats to needy families annually. Her dedication has led to the implementation of programs such as T.U.D.A. (Think, Understand & Don't Assume Autistic Playgroup), The African American Male Cascade Leadership Summer Literacy Program, the creation of self-run school kitchens within two Oakland Unified schools and most recently, Hella Nuts, the Plant-Based Eatery.
Mieko and her daughter Kami are the brainchildren of the dynamic Hella Nuts™, the Plant-Based Eatery. They both love to create and consume great food together! That connection and passion have moved them into a healthy, plant-based lifestyle, one they want to share with the world.
Our eatery offers cooking classes, as well as catering private events, weddings, business lunches, dinners, cocktail receptions, and more. We would love to discuss how to be a part of your next event.
Hella Nuts™ patent-pending nut meat resembles ground meat. It can be used for tacos, pasta, plant-based burgers, shepards pie, pizzas, burrittos, stuffed bell peppers and an array of other dishes.
